San Francisco 2011 talk

Hello all.

Since I’m not a big fan of boring lectures, tribunes or formal declarations of any kind, I’d like to introduce new format for my talk at the San Francisco conference, which, in my opinion, suits the idea of open collaborating community much better. I want those of you, who want their application to be re-designed in a fancy way, to send me links and descriptions of your work and I’ll do it not only for free (as always :), but using techniques that I’ll be talking about on stage. And I’ll use your particular application to show things in real world. To my mind it’s a totally win-win solution. I’ll have great examples to show during the talk, much better than imagining fake ones, and you’ll have nice UI/UX mockups to use (or not to use if you’d like to) in your application. Actual presence in the room during my talk is a great bonus :)

So don’t be shy and post your applications right here in comments!

P.S.: No commercial software is allowed. Sorry, folks.

  1. That seems interesting. If I’ll make it to SFO, I will come to your “talk”.
Anyway, there you have the URL to my application (Xournal):

The original desktop application is to be found here: http://xournal.sourceforge.net/
My port to Maemo is here: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/xournal/
And this is what the next generation UI may look like: https://picasaweb.google.com/anidel/XournalNextGenUI

The current Maemo port of Xournal (a note-taking / PDF annotation utility) uses GTK and a very static UI.
Next one will probably be in Qt.

    Thank you!

  2. Nice idea. I’ve been struggling with mobile UI concept for Siilihai web forum reader, but haven’t yet decided what it would look like. Currently it is a traditional Qt app and looks like an e-mail client. It already runs on Maemo but is not very usable without stylus.

  3. The topic of your talk is indeed an interesting one..:) I have been working on an open-source Qt-based client for Spotify (QSpot), and I am always looking into ways of improving the application UX in any ways possible.

The URL to the QSpot Extras download page is http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/qspot/ (any feedback is welcome).

The timing is such that I probably will not unfortunately be able to attend the conference myself.

    Many thanks in advance! :)

  4. Wow! Finally someone who is willing to help out aesthetically challenged geeks like me!
My project (qgvdial) needs help. I’ve moved to QML and ported my app to desktop, Maemo5 and s^3 and I need it to look good and be usable on all three. It has been a really tough task and I’d really appreciate it if you could have a look: http://code.google.com/p/qgvdial/
The Maemo binaries are on the maemo.org repos, Symbian and Windows installers on the downloads page http://code.google.com/p/qgvdial/downloads/list

    Thanks!

  5. That sounds really great!
I am the creator of SleepAnalyser, a Maemo5 based application which can record and visualise your sleep.
Some (not up to date) information/screenshots are on my website: http://www.ruinelli.ch/projects/maemo/sleepanalyser
The latest version is available here: http://maemo.org/packages/view/sleepanalyser/ (I suggest to install the testing version)
There is a big forum thread about it here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=57419&page=38

Its written in python, the GUI is based on Qt and designed with Qt Designer. So its quite easy to modify the UI.
I am not a very good designer (I am a programmer… :) ). my focus was always on easy usability and intuitive interactions. Some buttons are very huge so you shouldn’t miss them while you are sleepy :)

I would love to get some feedback/suggestions from you and am also open to include them into the project. As I live too far away (Switzerland) I will not be able to attend your talk.

    Thanks in advance!

  8. Hello, I am product manager for N900 Developer Edition (see wiki). I would be very interested to have a community-based new “theme” or visual identity created for the DE release.

  9. A big trend on our side this year is, we are trying to make our (normal) apps a bit more ‘fun’ to use and bring in some of the ideas from games in terms of wow effects.

  14. I have got 1 recommendation for your blog site. It seems like there are a handful of cascading stylesheet troubles while opening a selection of webpages inside google chrome and firefox. It is functioning alright in internet explorer. Possibly you can double check this.
