And as I promissed – second Fremantle wannabe UI improvement!

Maemo Menu.

In current and older Maemo iterations there is UI element called “Sidebar”. It’s pretty handy for quick launching apps and web bookmarks. Also it acts as small task switcher as well. But the bad thing is that it wastes too much screen space, that’s so important on handhelds.

Previously we already got rid of “Web” menu, that we replaced with multifunctional “Rapid access” menu. Maybe you’ve already noticed a small Maemo logo (in fact it’s “maemo.org” logo, which is not exactly Maemo, but whatever, it’s Christmas time :). This button acts same way no matter what application you are using:

It allows you to open instantly applications menu, jump to the Homescreen or open Task Switcher – most wanted functions in the OS. Also it has some extraordinary additional features but we’ll talk bout them tomorrow. Stay tuned!

  1. Why not make appear the menu moving the finger right like in Fennec?

  2. Good point, especially if you’ll read my next post :) But the bad thing is: if you’ll open menu with right flick, then how fennec or any other software will behave?

  3. I know it would be complicated to port it to reality, but it can be layers. If you are into fennec if you move the finger right the tabs menu will appear. And if you do it all fennec will move right to keep espace on screen for this lovely sidebar. Some ting like this:

I didn’t know if it’s easy to make withe the actual Maemo toolkit but I’ve been in the mozilla camp in Barcelona (as an infiltrated) and i’ve senn the presentation of fennec and I’think that nokia must include it on the platform and that it’s UI is a good model for aplications an OS’s for mobile devices, i think the objective in this kind of UI is to keep on screen only that things that user needs at moment and with te app/apps that he is working.

Forgive me for my bad english.

  5. I got your point, but I think flick from left to right is very widespread gesture. In Fennec it opens tab bar, but in some other software it can do more complicated stuff and I don’t think user will like when sidebar will open each time he turns the page or something else.
By the way Nokia already have UI that’s shown only when user needs it – it’s Hildon :)
P.S.: I really appreciate your attention on my posts, discussion is the main point of that blog so keep on commenting if you like, your english is totally underastandable)

  6. Oh yeah! I’think that hildon it’s a got platform and that it must have more developers. Maybe what hildon needs is to port aplications from the real GNOME to it enlightening it and redisinging its UI to make it easy of use in a mobile device.

Do you say that hildon only show things hen user needs it but i think the sidebar could hide automaticly or have an option to make it possible in the configuration dialog. I’dont know if you have seen it but one UI that I love is the Sugar UI form OLPC.

I’m talking a lot but at the moment i can’t do nothing because I’m starting IT degree at UPC in Barcelona Spain, and now I’m having some problems to pass the first programming subject of the degree XD.

  7. Sweet. AE might be a ‘short’ Maemo logo. Other DE have this so one might say its required because there is currently none.
